Consider this, everyone will give an account for their lives, their words, their actions, their thoughts & their attitudes in this life on earth when they stand before God in the end of their earthly existence. Some live long lives, heaping up heaps of unconfessed/unforgiven sins. Others live short lives. Nonetheless, ALL of us will give an account.
So, what does it mean “to give an account”? The words “account” and “accounted” have 6 verbs & 1 noun (Greek).
While many scoff at the idea of answering to God, the day & hour will come when each human being will give an account of what they have or haven’t done with their lives. Multitudes upon multitudes, millions upon millions have lived & died without forgiveness of sin, hence, judgment day for them will be a day of WOE!
Greek Verbs
1) Dokeō, primarily, “to be of opinion, think, suppose”, also signifies “to seem, to be accounted, reputed,” translated “accounted” in Mt. 10:42 (KJV) = “ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles…” (see also Lk. 22:24). It is not used ironically here, nor in Gal. 2:2) (see repute, seem, suppose, think);
2) Ellogeō, “to put to a person’s account” (Philemon 1:18, “If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account,” KJV.). Romans 5:13 uses it of sin: “For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.” The KJV uses ellogō here as “imputed”; other versions use “reckon”;
3) Hegeomai, primarily signifies “to lead”; then, “to consider”; it is translated “accounting” in Heb. 11:26 “… for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward,” KJV. Other versions use the word “recompense” (Rhm.), the Wey., Con., WMS., TCNT, Phil. et al. have “reward”; some have “accounting”, “esteeming”;
4) Logizomai, primarily signifies “to reckon”, whether by “calculation” or “imputation”, e.g., Gal. 3:6 (KJV) has “accounted” (or “imputed”). The R.V. has “reckoned”; Gk. scholars use the word “deliberate”, & so to “suppose”, “account” (Rom. 8:36, KJV = “accounted”; Rom. 14:14 (KJV) has “esteemeth”) 1 Cor. 4:1 has “account” (KJV); Heb. 11:19 has “accounting” (KJV); Jn. 11:50 has “consider” (KJV); 1 Pet. 5:12 uses logizomai (Greek) as “suppose”, KJV; the ASV has “account”; the Wey. has “regard”; The same Gk. word is used of love in 1 Cor. 13:5, as not taking “account” of evil, i.e. “thinks no evil”. In 2 Cor. 3:5 Paul uses it in repudiation of the idea that he & fellow-servants of God are self-sufficient as to “account anything” (R.V.) as from themselves. The A.V./KJV has “to think”; the Con. trans. has “thinking myself”; the Wey. trans. has “to decide”; the Mon. trans. has “reach any conclusion”; Phil. has “personal judgments”; Neb. has “cannot claim anything”.
2 Tim. 4:16 uses the Gk. word logizomai as laying to a person’s account. The KJV reads, “… laid to their charge”.
In Phil 4:8 it signifies to think upon a matter by way of taking account of its character. All in all, this Gk. word includes conclude, count, charge, esteem, impute, reason, reckon, think, & suppose.
5) Kataxioō denotes “to account worthy (Kata, intensive, axios, worthy), to judge worthy”, e.g., Lk. 20:35 = “… those who are counted worthy,” NKJV. (note: some manuscripts have it in 21:36 also). Gk. scholars point out that the most authentic manuscripts have the verb katischuō, “to prevail”; Acts 5:41 has “counted worthy to suffer…”. 2 Thes. 1:5 has “be counted worthy of the Kingdom.”
6) Exoutheneō, “to make of no account”, frequently signifies “to despise”. In 1 Cor. 6:4, it is used, not in a contemptuous sense, but of Gentile judges, before whom the saints are not to go to law with one another. the Apostle Paul is not speaking of any believers as “least esteemed” (KJV). In 2 Cor. 10:10, the KJV has “contemptible”, the R.V. has “of no account”;
Noun
Logos, a word or saying, also means “an account” which one give by the word of mouth, see Mt. 12:36. This verse is the one I have in mind, as my title suggests:
“But I say (Jesus speaking) to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” (vs. 37) “For by your words you will be justified, & by your words you will be condemned,” vs. 37, NKJV. Romans 14:12, likewise says, “So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.” Paul had just written, “… For we shall ALL stand before the judgment seat of Christ,” vs. 10. “For it is written: ‘As I live, says the LORD, every knee shall bow to Me, & every tongue shall confess to God,” vs. 11. The Gk. word is logos/account.
So….
When all has been said & done in this life, we ALL will stand/bow before God and give account of our words, attitudes, deeds. No one escapes! \
Too many fake their relationship with God. Hell, as I write, is overcrowded with fakes, flakes, & snakes who thought they could & would fool God! God sees through all religious facades. He knows who are His & who aren’t. [see other texts using this Gk. noun: Mt. 18:23, = “settle accounts”;]
At the judgment seat of Christ, we shall not give account of others; we will give account of ourselves!!
