(Pt. 1)
Today I want to address the subject of angels once again. Recently, the LORD gave us another Word on angels in which He spoke “… be aware that I have assignment. Therefore when you have need of the angels who are charged to keep care of you, give them assignments so they can work for you…” (full word at the end of this article).
Jesus/Angels
To start, Psalms 103:20 says, “Bless the LORD, ye His angels, that excel in strength, that do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His Word.” (KJV)
In reference to man Psalms 8:5 says, “For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels and hast crowned him with glory & honor.” (KJV) Insignificant as man is, yet he/she are no accident in the divine community – we were created by God. Another translation I read states that man was made lower “than a god”. The word ‘elōhîm (God, Gen. 21:33), according to Bible scholars belonged to a pre-Israelite history (time), where God & god were recognized (‘Ēl-‘olām = another spelling). There are good sources one can find in reference to this name. This name has 3 interpretations, since it means either “a divine being” (god) or “divine beings” (angels) or the “divine Being par excellence” (God). The context must guide us here: example is Ps. 97:7: “confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.” Ps. 138:1: “I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto Thee.”
Back to Ps. 103:20
Here we have an invocation to the celestial assembly. Angels. The RSV reads, “Bless the LORD, o you His angels, you mighty ones who do His Word, hearkening to the voice of His Word!” (see also Joel 3:11 where we find “thy Mighty ones” mentioned – KJV). Vs. 21, “Bless ye the LORD, all ye His hosts; ye ministers of His, that do His pleasure.” (KJV). “His hosts”, is a masculine plural, & as “host” elsewhere has a feminine pl. (except 148:2), many emend “hosts” to “host”.
So “angel” can mean either a human messenger or a supernatural being. The Bible characteristically uses (Heb.) mal’āk to designate a human (e.g., 1 Sam. 11:4 & 1 Kgs. 19:2 etc.) The consonants L’K in the Semitic languages signify “send”, with a more focused nuance in certain languages of specifically ‘send with a commission/message’. There are, it is stated, over 200 occurrences of the word in the O.T. which refer to God’s supernatural emissaries. These “messengers” are also mentioned in other cultures – sometime no distinction is distinguished between human/supernatural. The Vulgate’s consistent use of “angelsus” for “divine messenger” in contrast to “human” identified by the noun “nuntius”. There is a tremendous amount of info. one can dig out about this subject. I could write dozens & dozens of pages but to keep it short, let us proceed.
(Pt. 2)
“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil,” Mt. 4:1. So begins Jesus’ trial of endurance against the elements, hunger/thirst/demonic. Note vs. 6: “And saith unto Him, ‘If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning thee: & in their hands they shall bear Thee up, lest at any time Thou dash Thy foot against a stone.’” (KJV) Ok. The devil quotes Scripture! Just where do we find what Satan quoted? First thing: Satan puts doubt out: “If Thou be the Son of God,” insinuation of a doubt. (note: some believe Satan wasn’t sure if Jesus was the Son of God, hence, His temptation was to find this out). “He shall give His angels charge concerning Thee…” (note the words in the following Prophetic Word at end of article). This quote is a mutilated quotation of Ps. 91:11 where “angels” are mentioned. (Heb., tsâvâh = charge, enjoin, appoint, command, send a messenger etc.). Ps. 91:11 = “For He shall give His angels charge over Thee, to keep Thee in all Thy ways.” (KJV). Vss. 11 & 12 are quoted by the devil in Mt. 4:6 & Lk. 4:10-11.
The Angel of The LORD
“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear Him, & delivereth them,” Ps. 34:7, Here angels are heavenly beings, unseen (see other related texts, e.g., Ex. 14:19; Jud. 6:11, 12, 14; Josh. 5:14; 2 Kgs. 6:17 et al.). Ps. 78:49 speaks of “destroying angels” (in ref. to Ex. 11:1 – 12:51 = plague. Do you think some of the destruction in our nation is caused by Satan or God or both? Ex. 12:23 speaks of a “destroyer”. “The destroying angel” in 2 Sam. 24:16 & 1 Chron. 21:15 is mentioned.
Back to Mt. 4:6: Why would Jesus need angelic protection> He was both (fully) human & divine. It was His human side the angels were to watch over, just like we humans.
After O.T.
Literature written after the O.T., including the Apocrypha & N.T., the functions typical of “messengers” continue to apply to what are now better termed in English as “angels”. They continue to serve as protectors (see Jud. 3:10), to relay & interpret God’s messages to the human race (2 Bar 55:3 – 56:56), or to requite disobedience to the LORD (Acts 12:23 where “the angel of the Lord smote him (Herod).”
Disbelief
The Jewish Sadducees did not believe in angels (Acts 23:8), but the Pharisees did (same text).
Demons
Are demons fallen angels? To a certain extent angels could correspond to the demons in Gk. religion (see PHilo, Gigant. 6; 16; = Demon). We know that Clement of Rome, Ignatius, Hermas, Athenagares, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Bardesones, Origen, Cyprian, Vitorinus, Lactantius, Gregory Thaumatargus, Methodius, Peter, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Jude, Commodianus, Julius Africanus, Novation, et al. all wrote about angels; Mt., Mk., Lk., Acts, Paul & John (Patmos) also wrote about angels.
(Pt. 3)
The Greeks were familiar with “messengers” from the “gods” since the archaic period (see the Iliad & Odyssey). This does apply already to older ideas like the heavenly army of YHWH in Joshua 5:14 where encountered the “Captain of the host of the LORD”. (vs. 14 also).
[note: Yahweh Zebaoth & the sons of the gods (Benê ‘ēlîm/’elōhîm), which have parallels in N.W. Semitic mythology, according to Prof. J.W. Van Henten, of Amsterdam.]. He also tells us that the traditions concerning (mounted) angels in 2 Macc. 2:21 & 3:24 are connected with the common motif of the epiphaneia of the patron god of the temple, who protects his temple by causing natural phenomena or by sending his messengers. Also, in the description of the rescue of the sanctuary of Delphi from the Gauls in 279 BCE by Pausanias the heroes Hyperochus, Laodocus, Pyrrhus & Phylacus appear in this role (10.23.1-2). The angels who assist the Jews on the battlefield (e.g., 2 Macc. 10:29-31) correspond to pagan supernatural helpers like the Dioskouroi. We can compare the guardian angels with certain Mesopotamian gods, the fiery appearance of angles & divine messengers in the N.W. Semitic texts (a good source is Biblical & Canaanite Notes of the Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice by M.S. Smith – taken from Qumran, RQ 12 [1985-1987], 585-588, & angles as companions of the soul (psychopomps) after death (e.g., T. Job 52; Lk. 16:22).
Gabriel
We’ve heard alot about this great angel. This angelic messenger appears in Dan. 8:16, 9:21; Lk. 1:19, 26; Mt. 1:20. the Hebrew name is Gabrîy’êl = messenger of God, “an archangel, from geber, a warrior, mighty; the Greek, Gabriēl, an archangel. This angel manifests himself in a dream (Mt. 1:20; 2:13, 19) to bring a message from the LORD or to help people (Acts 5:19).
Raphael
This angle accompanies Tobias (Tob. 5:4 – 12:22) & helps him to get rid of the demon who caused the death of the earlier husbands of his bride Sarah (8:2, 3: “Then Tobias remembered the words of Raphael, & he took the fish’s liver & heart out of the bag… & put them on the embers… The odor of the fish so repelled the DEMON that he fled…”).
Near the Throne of God
Rev. 5:2, 11 shows us “a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice of many angels round about the throne,” (vs. 11). In Mark 12:25 (& parallels) angels are connected to sources which refer to a coming community of humans & angels or a transformation to angels or “stars” (see 1 Enoch 39:4, 5; 71:11; 104:6; 4 Ezra 7:85, 95. In Qumram texts a common worship by humans/angels can be realized also in the present).
We see angels with wings in paintings & drawings, but sometimes represented without wings (1 Enoch 61:1 according to some mss.). The “angel of the Lord” transports Habakkuk in one day from Judah to the pagan city of Babylon & back by carrying him by his hair to bring Daniel a meal in the lion-pit (see Bel 33-39; Ez. 8:3). Angels can & do resemble humans as we read in Dan. 8:15; 10:18; Jos. As. 14:3) & can have a shining/fiery appearance (see Dan. 10:5, 6).
They engage in a variety of doings, acting as intermediaries for the revelations of the Torah (Acts 7:53; Gal. 3:19). They can & do reveal divine knowledge & explain revelations (see Zech. 1:9; 4:5, 6; Dan. 8:16; see also 4Q Serekh Shirot ‘Olat ha-Shabbat (note: 4Q = Qumran Cove 4); see also Uriel in 4 Ezra. There are many, many sources that can be cited. The angel Metanoia is mentioned in Jos. As. 15:7, 8.
Deified Abstractions
If one really wants to go DEEP into all this, look up these names in the Greek Bible. It is often hard to determine whether the mention of a deified abstraction in an ancient source always implies a real cult or is just a metaphor – some are never personified:
Aidos, Anaideia, Ananke, Ara, Arete, Asebeia, Asphaleia, Athanasia, Bia, Boule, Charis, Chronos, Demon, Dikaiosyne, Eleos, Eloutheria, Elpis, Enlautos, Eris, Eulabeia, Euphrosyne, Euporia, Eusebeia, Gamos, Gelos, Geras, Gerousia, Hedone, Hegemonia, Homonoia, Hora, Horme, Hybris, Hygieia, Hypnos, Kairos, Lethe, Limos, Monia, Metanoia, Mneia, Nike, Ochlos, Paranomia, Peitho, Penia, Pheme, Philia, Phobos, Pistis, Ploutos, Pronoia, Sophrosyne, Soteria, Techno, Thanatos etc. These are recognized as “gods” – some had temples / cultic sites, others did not. Not that these are recognized as “angels”, but as “gods”.
(Pt. 4)
Gods, goddesses, angels, demons, devils – are found in Scripture. Supernatural “messengers” are named a Ugarit (N. Syria), those of Baal are characteristically Gapnu (vine) & Ugoru, while Qadish & Amrar Serve Athirat (Asherah). Papsukkal is a typical envoy of the high “gods” in Sumerian texts, and in Akkadian texts Kakka or Nuska is the messenger of their choice. In Greece, Hermes is the Messenger & herald par excellence, with a female counterpart in Iris. These deities all behave in a fashion similar to their human counterparts.
Prof. S.A. meier (who wrote Angel of Yahweh, Destroyer, mediator), says “Because the O.T. is reluctant to provide names for God’s angels (angels are given proper names only in Dan. 8:12; Gen. 32:29; Judg. 13:17, 18), there is no onomastic evidence from within the Bible to determine if Yahweh, like other deities in the ancient Near East, prefers dispatching a particular supernatural being on missions…” (p. 53).
Sons of God
There are several passages that speak of heavenly beings – benê ‘elyôn, “children of Elyon” (Ps. 82:6) & benê ‘elîm (Ps. 29:1; 89:7) or benê (hā) ‘elōhîm (Gen. 6:2, 4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; & originally Dt. 32:8) “children of God”, “children of (the) gods” or “divine beings”. Scholars point out that the congnate expressions referring to a plurality of “divine beings” at Ugarit bn il is more common that bn ilm. Bn il clearly refers to, as Prof. S.B. Parker of Boston states, “the children of El” – at least, he says, in one text El addresses the “gods” (ilm) as “My children”. The 2 expressions bn il “children of El” & phr ilm “assembly of the gods” have been conflated in the unique expression phr bn ilm.
In the Heb. language it is argued whether the pl. form of the word for ‘god’ in the phrase benê (hā) ‘elōhîm represents the pl. concept, ‘gods’, or the sing. ‘God’. Heb. scholars tell us that ancient Israelites might specify either a sing. or pl. referent is suggested by the occasional substitution of ‘ēlîm (pl.) or ‘Elyôn (sing.) for (hā) ‘elōhîm.
I’ll let the experts argue this out. If one can read Heb., they will run across many texts with these Heb. words / and Scriptures where they are found.
The apocrypha & pseudepigrapha conceive of the “children of God” as angels. However, the N.T. adopts the idea/term as God’s people: sometimes applied to the quasi-angelic nature & status of the faithful in the final transformation. This eschatalogical sense of the terms “children of God” & “children of the Most High” appears in, Mt. 5:9 = “children of God” (KJV), huioi theou”; Lk. 6:35 = “children of the Highest” (KJV) or “children of the Most High” in other trans., (huioi Hypsistou”). Ps. 82:6 uses this phrase also (KJV). In Lk. 20:36, where Jesus says that those who experience resurrection will be isangeloi “the equivalent of angels” & huioi theou “children of God” – they are not angeloi but isangeloi (see Mk. 12:25 / Mt. 22:30, which use only the expression hōs angeloi “like angels”). Also in 1 Jn. 3:2 those addressed are now tekna theou “children of God”, i.e., angels, but will in the end be like God (homoioiautōi), i.e., divine beings. Good things ahead if we keep the faith & finish our course!
(Pt. 5)
Stars
The Heb. term kôkāb, kôkābîm derives from the proto-Semitic root KBKB, meaning ‘star’ in the majority of the other Semitic languages (Ug kbkb; Akk kakkabu; Aram kôkbā’, kôkabtā’; Ar kawkab; Eth. kokab etc. It is attested 37 times in the Bible. In the N.T. 2 Gk terms are used for ‘star’: αστήρ, attested 24 times, & αστρον, attested 4 time. “Stars” were widely reguarded as “gods”. (see Gen. 1:6 = lit. “stars”, ‘light’; Amos 5:8; Job 9:9; Ps. 148:5; Wis. 13:2), the work of His fingers (Ps. 8:4), belong to the totality of the world of man.
There are many texts where we find star or stars – some = lights, others as supernatural beings. Some texts speak of an astral deity instead of a physical/natural entity. “Host of heaven” appears 19 times in the Heb. O.T. Paul, in 1 Cor. 15:40 ,41, tells us that “There are also celestial bodies, & bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, & the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, & another glory of the moon, & another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.” (KJV). He tells us in vs. 42, “So also is the resurrection of the dead.” He compares the resurrection dead to stars in glory.
Ps. 89:6-9
These texts show the status of Yahweh among the “sons of the gods”: in this context the sky (in the sense of ‘divinity’) & the gehal qedōsîm (‘the congregation of the saints’, i.e., the gods of an originally polytheistic pantheon) praise the LORD: Yahweh is ‘elōhê Sebā’ôt (‘God of hosts’), the Almighty who rules over the sky gods & is a primus inter pares in their assembly (see Job 15:15. Judges 5:20 says, “They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera” were the ‘stars” angels?, ancient divinities? (Isa. 14:12, 13 speaks of Lucifer, or “day star”).
The identification of personified ‘stars’ with ‘angels” of the heavenly hosts is well accepted: the ‘stars’ stand in God’s presence (1 Kgs. 22:19; 2 Chron. 18:18); they serve Him (Ps. 103:21; Neh. 9:6); in Sir 43:8, 10 the identification of ‘stars’ with soldiers of an army is evident, see Rev. 1:20. At the head of the heavenly hosts stands a Prince of the army (Joshua 5:14, 15; Dan. 8:11), probably the highest ‘star’.
Job 25:5 / 15:15 the stars appear as deities (see Job 38:7 also). We have astral cults & religions today – the worship of the sun, moon, & stars – astrological & astronomical worshippers. They were in ancient days. Daniel 5:11 speaks of those who had “the spirit of the holy gods”, “wisdom of the gods”, magicians, astrologers & soothsayers.
[note: in the pseudepigraphic books we find contradictory views about astrology (see 1 Enoch 8:3; Jub. 12:16-18; Sib. Or. II 220-236, which condemn these workers of witchcraft. Yet some passages show a relatively positive attitude towards astrology, betraying stranger Hellenistic influence (see 1 Enoch 72:1-37; 75:3; 2 Enoch. 21:6; 30:3). One can also read about misinterpretation of celestial phenomena in haggadic & talmudic literature (e.g., Gen. Rabba 85:2; 87:4; Exod. Rabba 1:18; B. Sanh. volb).
As a prophetic symbol the “stars” are mentioned in Dan. 8:10 as an allusion to the Jews who will succumb to Hellenistic paganism. Rev. 1:6 shows 7 stars appear as the symbol of 7 angels (see also Rev. 1:20; 2:1; 3:1). Astral symbolism is found in Rev. 12:1 & a mythological allusion may be seen in 12:4.
The star symbol reappears in Mt. 2:1-10, the most famous “STAR” (vs. 2, 10) is the one we all know best. In Rev. 22:16 Jesus uses the image of the “star” referring to Himself ‘I am the root & the offspring of David, the bright & morning star,” see also Rev. 2:28 & 2 Pet 1:19 where the Greek term Φωσφόρος is used.
So…
Jesus Christ the Lord, whom we all here serve & worship, is the “Bright & Morning Star”, the splendor & glory, resides in our hearts in Spirit (see Eph. 3:17; 2 Cor. 13:5).
Not only is Jesus the “Lamb of God” & the “Lion of the tribe of Judah” He is the Eternal “Morning star” i.e., “Day Star”. Rev. 2:28 also mentions “the morning star”. Some take this to mean that the martyr is to shine like a star in heaven, is to be given a kind of astral immortality, as in Dan. 12:3, where the resurrected saints will be “as the stars for ever & ever.” This same concept of a glorious starry immortality for the righteous is also seen in 1 Enoch 104:2; Boruch 51:10; & 2 Esdras 7:97.
Pagans also believed in such, for certain heroes, e.g., Hercules & Perseus, had been changed into constellations as a reward for their heroic deeds. The “morning star” – the light of a new day, the symbol of Heaven’s ministry to earth, in which we believers minister. Some believe the Morning Star is the astral belief that the goddess Ishtar, as the “evening star” setting at night, signified DEATH!, but the Morning Star rising the next day, symbolized LIFE & immortality. Yet another view is held: the Morning Star was the symbol of world dominion. By giving the martyr the Morning Star, Christ is bestowing on him/her world dominion, which corresponds to them ruling “with a rod of iron”, Rev. 2:27. Peter says “… as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns & the morning star rises in your hearts,” -2 Pet. 1:19, NKJV. The day refers to His 2nd coming, which will affect the WHOLE world! Ask Christ to come into your hearts; repent of your sins first. Be born again (Jn. 3:3,5), let Christ SHINE through you to give light to those in darkness. Amen
WOS – ANGELS AWAITING ASSIGNMENTS
I speak unto you this day and I say, be aware that I have assigned angels to you who are awaiting assignments. Therefore when you have need of the angels who are charged to keep care of you, give them the assignments so they can work for you.
There are definitely things which the angels can do that you cannot do and when you make use of them they are glad to be of usefulness. Many times, My people are ignorant of the fact that I have given to them angels to assist them in their labors for Me. I do not intend them to be in such a condition of neediness and not use what I have provided for them.
Consider it is not My intention for those who are Mine to assume that they must carry their loads alone. I have never intended for My people to burn out because they are failing to use the resources I have provided for them. Just as some of My people are ignorant regarding the Holy Spirit or they have been taught against the Holy Spirit by men and women who see themselves as the ultimate sources of all wisdom. Such ones as have been under these false teachers are afraid of My Spirit. Likewise some of My people have been taught against angels because they are told all angels are wicked. However that is not true and I have provided both My Holy Spirit and My Angels to be helpful to My People.
This day consider carefully what are you doing in your own lives? Are you making use of the angels whom I have given to you? Or, are you thinking by your own efforts both mentally and physically that you will somehow make great decisions and have the strength of Samson forever?
It is not My intention for My people to be independent of the provisions I have intended for them to make use of. Rather I want them to come forth, ever thankful for the Ways I care for them and daily provide all their needs so they can come forth rejoicing each day. Inasmuch as I am their Father and they are My children, whether they be young, middle-aged or elderly, I want them to use what I provide. You are not meant to focus on your abilities, you’re to know that I am the God of miracles and mercies and I delight to give to those who look to Me those mercies and miracles.
When you have come into My Divine Love Family, you are no longer of the world whereby you have to labor continually by the sweat of your brows, or by your own wits, or mean criminal activities to survive. Know that you have been Redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb and your sins have been washed away by His Blood covering over you.
Therefore do not trust in you and what you think you must do. Trust in Me for I am the Source and the Resource who is Omnipresent showing you how good it is to be in My Kingdom, rather than the kingdom of carnality. With these things in mind, always make use of My Angels given to you when you need their assistance for they are waiting to be given assignments by you.
I do not want My people to be afraid of the Supernatural Realms of Life, rather I want them to follow the commands of My Spirit and by the same to come forth in the strategies of Victory. My people are not meant to be the continual victims of the wicked who hate them and want them destroyed. No, I want the ones who are Mine to see that by My Powers, the enemy forces are devastated, destroyed, and damned. When any people who have claimed to be “Christians” are nothing more than witchcraft plants of the devil, know they will be exposed and by their own choices damned. These ones are literally damned forever because I have given them many chances to Truly Repent and come under The Blood. Instead they have scoffed and mocked My Supernatural Covering and chosen the way of demons and are directed by such every day.
These will scoff Me, My Son, My Spirit, My Angels and My True People. They become incessant liars who cannot tell the Truth and are reprobate by their choices. They can never find satisfaction because they prefer to partake of demonic messages above the Truth. Some even make fortunes off of their lies and persecutions of My people. Know of a surety, you will, if you use the weapons I have given to you, see your enemies destroyed by their own stupid and dumb choices. All of the riches they have stolen from My people they will squander or leave behind when they are hurled into Hell. There they will be in anguish and torment continually over their own thievery, stupidity, and dumbness.
However it is too late for them to Repent and be given one more chance. Forever they must remain in the agonies of the damned because they chose such a course. Be always thankful unto Me for I am the God of infinite and continual mercies and miracles. I want you to be using The Angels to combat the unseen forces of darkness which want to see you destroyed and devastated. Know the Angels will do things for you as you give them assignments and they are unseen. No one can shoot them or poison them or steal from them. This is because they are in the Supernatural Realm wherein the carnal eye cannot see them. Thank Me for The Angels and the opportunity to see them work for you. Indeed the more you see into the unseen world, the more you appreciate The Angels.
